Southampton Airport volunteers win 'Best Volunteering Team Award'

Staff at Southampton Airport have been rewarded for their volunteering work by being named the 'Best Volunteering Team' at the BAA I-Volunteer Awards.

The 22 employees entered the awards earlier this year with a view to receive donations to the charity of their choice from the BAA's own charity, the BAA Communities Trust. Each successful entry received a £200 donation; shortlisted entries £500; and winners £5,000.

The award was given for the initiatives developed with Eastleigh College, which included activities such as specialist fire training for cabin crew students, the donation of two Land Rovers for use in Automotive Studies, and the donation of a greenhouse facility for students with learning difficulties.

Michelle Merry, airport duty manager and a member of the winning team, said: "I was absolutely thrilled that the Southampton Airport team involved in the activities with Eastleigh College was shortlisted. It was a particularly proud moment when we won the award, and I am looking forward to working closely with Eastleigh College to invest the generous donation by the BAA Communities Trust for the benefit of our local students."

Kevin Brown, managing director of Southampton Airport, added: "I'm exceptionally proud of the volunteering culture present at Southampton Airport. The activities with Eastleigh College is a shining example of the great work many of our staff offer to do in their own time."
