Stansted Airport

Stansted security officer Alli Irvin has secured sponsorship for her forthcoming charity climb from an unlikely source: Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

Alli, a senior health and safety representative with trade union Unite, is a member of frontline staff members and senior managers taking part in scaling 15 Welsh peaks in just three days this September. Managing director Stewart Wingate, terminal general manger Neale Jouques and head of health and safety Andy Sneddon are among others competing.

Many of those taking part have been involved in Stansted's Fit for Business programme, which featured a number of regular exercise sessions at the airport.

Andy Sneddon said: "Fit for Business was an opportunity for staff to do some exercise at the airport before or after work. But feedback showed many wanted to take it one step further and take on a challenge that would put their fitness to the test.

"This is also a fantastic opportunity for frontline staff and senior managers to spend some time together outside of the airport, in a common task. It will benefit personal relationships and the business."

Speaking of her high-profile sponsor, Alli said: "I emailed all my trade union contacts seeking sponsorship and Gordon Brown's office came back with a pledge. I was gobsmacked!"
