Low-cost US service launches

A low-cost carrier has launched it new service between the UK and New York's JFK International Airport.

Earlier today (June 21st), the first Zoom Airways flight between Gatwick and JFK took off, with seats on the service costing just £129 or $199 each way.

Unlike some other low-cost carriers, Zoom Airways does not require passengers to buy return tickets or include a Saturday stay to buy the cheap tickets.

Bob Mann, an airline consultant, told the Associated Press: "It's a very low price for the summer."

He added that Zoom's use of Boeing 767-300s could mean that the airline finds the daily service is commercially viable.

"That's an airplane on which [at] $199 each way, you can cover your costs," Mr Mann explained.

However, it has recently been reported that another low-cost carrier, flyglobespan, has had to scale back its transatlantic service from Liverpool's John Lennon Airport due to a lack of demand.
