Fly Gibraltar fails to launch

An airline which aimed to offer flights from Gibraltar to several destinations in the UK has failed to obtain investment and regulatory approval.

Fly Gibraltar had aimed to offer flights from the island to airports like London Stansted, Birmingham, Bristol, Manchester, Dublin and Cork.

However, reports suggest that the airline failed to get approval from the Civil Aviation Authority and this lead to promised investment being withdrawn.

Now, it has been suggested that the Gibraltar government may now offer the promised routes to other airlines.

British Airways, Monarch and GB Airways all currently offer flights from the UK to the Rock.

Improvements to the island's main airport are due to be completed by 2008. These include a tunnel under the runway, which is currently intersected by a road.
