New laws which should make it easier for disabled people to fly around Europe have been welcomed by industry bodies in the UK.
Recent EU legislation makes it illegal for an airline to refuse a booking on the grounds of disability. These rules also cover people with temporary disabilities - meaning that holidaymakers injured on vacation also receive legal protection.
Anyone declined access to a plane can now complain to the Disability Rights Commission which can refer the case to the Civil Aviation Authority - which has the authority to impose unlimited fines.
The Association of British Travel Agents' (ATBA) head of consumer affairs, Keith Richards, explained that the new rules extended beyond the current scope of the UK's Disability Discrimination Act as this only covers tour operators and travel agents.
He said: "Discrimination tends to come from a lack of understanding rather than a lack of ability to provide a good service.
"Treating customers with reduced mobility makes good business sense - especially as this is a growing sector."
