British Airways has published its traffic statistics for August, revealing a 5.3 per cent increase in its passenger figures compared to a year earlier.

This rise in traffic was mainly due to weak figures for August 2006, when there were 1,280 cancellations and new security requirements, including restrictions on hand baggage.

The airline also announced that its capacity for carrying passengers rose by 2.8 per cent year-on-year in August, with the combination of these figures leading to a load factor of 80 per cent.

BA also reviewed recent strategic developments regarding its business, welcoming the Competition Commission's BAA airports market study and reiterating its belief that competition between airports will improve customer service levels and promote investment.

The airline is offering an autumn sale which it claims will enable customers to save up to 50 per cent on nearly 100 destinations worldwide.

Among the offers are flights to Johannesburg from £469, transfers to New York from £239 and tickets to Los Angeles from £299.
