Camping and caravanning continues to be popular with British people, with more than £1 billion a year spent on the holiday pursuit, according to a new report.

Research carried out by Barclays shows that over seven per cent of the adult population – more than three million people – are active campers and caravanners.

The average camping enthusiast spends £382 a year on equipment, trips, membership and subscriptions related to their hobby – over 50 per cent more than five years ago, according to the survey.

Surprisingly, the most active campers of all are people in their 30s, while almost two-thirds of the people who said they enjoyed camping and caravan holidays were under 40.

Garry Duggan, Barclays Personal Loans manager, said: "It is clear that camping and caravanning are experiencing something of a revival, despite the distinctly unfriendly camping weather we have experienced this summer!"
