Cost the key for travellers

March 5, 2009

British travellers have identified financial prudence as the major factor in determining their travel plans for 2009, according the results of a survey carried out by American Express.

The results of the survey indicated that 16% of respondents will be looking to take a cheap holiday in the months ahead, with 13% stating that the strength of the euro against the pound makes European destinations off-limits.

"Clearly Britons are feeling the strain in the UK at the moment," said Chris Rolland of American Express. "Finances are stretched, jobs are scarce and morale is low. People are understandably keen to get away on a much-needed holiday."

The results of the survey echo the sentiments detailed in a recent poll carried out by Holiday Extras. In a survey of over 1,000 taken earlier this year, nearly half of all questioned were keen to discover something entirely new on their 2009 travels.

Mike Whiting, managing editor at Holiday Extras, at the time said: "With the pound currently weak against both the dollar and the euro, it is perhaps no surprise that many people are looking to new and different destinations.
