Baggage limits 'to go soon'

The chief executive of British Airways has predicted that the one-bag limit on hand luggage for air passengers will be removed soon.

The current one-bag limit on carry-on luggage for air travellers will be lifted soon, according to the chief executive of British Airways.

Willie Walsh said the removal of the restriction, which was implemented to strengthen security onboard aircraft, will help eliminate the 'hassle factor' associated with modern air travel.

The chief executive made his comments as BA announced operating profit of £556 million in the six months from April to September, up from £442 million in the same period of 2006.

"Good news for our customers will be the removal of restrictions on hand-baggage which we expect soon," he said. "This will go a long way to relieving the hassle factor of the one-bag limit.

"At the same time we continue to staff up to record levels in the terminals and have improved our direct baggage performance in recent weeks."

BA recently announced an order for 36 new aircraft - 12 Airbus A380s and 24 Boeing 787s - which Mr Walsh said would serve high-density routes as well as offer the flexibility to open new services.

The new planes are also expected to help the airline towards its goal of improving fuel efficiency by 25 per cent between 2005 and 2025.
