Brits warned of currency changes
British travellers have been warned of the impending currency shifts in Malta and Cyprus after a survey revealed the lack of awareness of the changes.
Regular travellers to Cyprus and Malta have been warned of the forthcoming adoption of the euro in the countries.
According to foreign exchange company Travelex, 73 per cent of British travellers are unaware that the two islands are set to change their currencies on January 1st 2008.
This is despite the countries' popularity with UK holidaymakers, with Travelex revealing that the Cyprus pound and the Maltese lira are among its top ten currencies sold.
Figures from the islands' tourism associations show that 57 per cent of travellers to Cyprus and 38 per cent of visitors to Malta in 2006 were British.
Holidaymakers who have recently been to the island hotspots or are regular visitors there were urged to exchange any leftover currency before it becomes redundant.
Steve O'Donovan of Travelex said: "Our research shows that 50 per cent of travellers don't exchange their leftover travel money.
"With the change in currency coming up in two major holiday destinations, we are urging travellers to make sure they don't lose out."
