Lufthansa, EgyptAir begin cooperation

Lufthansa and EgyptAir have begun a cooperation agreement that is set to boost travel between the two countries.

German airline Lufthansa began a codesharing agreement with EgyptAir as its winter schedule came into operation on October 28th, which is expected to improve opportunities for travel between the two countries.

All flights offered by both carriers between Germany and Egypt will operate under the codesharing agreement, meaning that there will be two flight numbers on all routes from Frankfurt and Munich to Cairo as well as on services from Frankfurt to Alexandria.

Lufthansa plans to extend codesharing services to other destinations in Egypt and north Africa, while EgyptAir intends to transfer its flight numbers to enable onward connections within Germany and Europe and on routes to North America.

All passengers will benefit from harmonised timetables and improved connections between the countries, while members of the carriers' frequent flyer programmes will be able to collect airmiles on all Lufthansa and EgyptAir routes.

Speaking when the agreement was signed earlier this year, Lufthansa chairman Wolfgang Mayrhuber said: "EgyptAir is an ideal partner for us because the cooperation arrangement will enable us to position ourselves long term in an important, dynamic growth market in north Africa.

"We are thus further expanding our global route network for our customers."

Lufthansa has historic ties with Egypt, having first launched a service between Frankfurt and Cairo via Munich in 1959.
