New Zealand 'top spot for Brits'

The results of the Telegraph Travel Awards are in, and show that New Zealand is Britons' favourite international destination.

New Zealand is British travellers' favourite worldwide destination, according to the 2007 Telegraph Travel Awards.

Britons' fondness for all things Antipodean was emphasised by Telegraph readers this year, who voted Australia their third favourite international location, while Indian Ocean nation the Maldives took second spot.

Recent growth in the travel industry appears to have fostered a sense of adventurousness in UK holidaymakers, with none of the Telegraph readers' three favourite foreign cities - Sydney, Cape Town and Vancouver - in Europe.

The newspaper found that Italy, Greece and Switzerland are Brits' favourite countries within their home continent.

Even closer to home, York, Edinburgh and Bath were voted the top three cities in the UK, while Gatwick, Manchester and Birmingham emerged as the most popular British airports.

Singapore Airlines is considered the best scheduled carrier among Telegraph readers, followed by Emirates and Qatar Airways, while Air Berlin, Jet2 and Zoom were recognised in the 'no-frills airline' category.

One of the most striking trends identified in the results is the swift fall from grace of the USA, with Telegraph travel writer Charles Starmer-Smith pointing out that many people have been put off by the tightened security and unwelcoming nature of the country in recent years.
