Successful travel 'gives lifeblood to regions'

A travel industry spokesperson has underlined the importance of a successful tourism industry for regions in the UK and across Europe.

The travel industry has developed into an important part of regional economies and is now the 'lifeblood' of many areas across the UK and Europe, according to an industry spokesperson.

According to recent research by the Civil Aviation Authority, regional airports in the UK handled 42 per cent of all passengers in 2006.

Neil Pakey, deputy chair of the Airport Operators Association and managing director of Liverpool John Lennon Airport, said this growth can be partly attributed to the success of low-cost airlines operating from regional hubs.

Another factor in the trend is the changing nature of holiday booking in the UK, he claimed.

"So many people now book their flights directly [on] the internet, whereas before we had to do everything through the airline or through the travel agent," Mr Pakey explained.

"Those sort of dynamic changes have been very beneficial to the regions right across Europe and have given some lifeblood to some of those regions and their economies."

As well as offering British people more travel options, the success of regional airports has also bolstered local economies by enabling more foreign tourists to visit the UK, Mr Pakey concluded.
