Top 5 Things To Do on a Weekend In Krakow

Krakow is small enough to explore on foot, which makes it the ideal weekend city break. To start exploring the minute you get there, remember to book your airport transfers in advance.

Here are five unmissable Krakow sights for a weekend away.

Main Square

There's so much to do in the middle of Krakow's Old Town. Potter about the amber stalls in the Cloth Hall, gaze at traditional pottery shops and indulge in real hot chocolate at a nearby café. It's the perfect way to spend your first afternoon in Krakow.

If you've got time, book in advance for the Rynek Underground museum to explore excavated medieval stalls showing what life was like in old Krakow.

Kazimierz

This trendy part of Krakow is the former Jewish quarter and is full of quirky cafes, bars and restaurants, as well as stunning historic synagogues. Head over during the afternoon for a history lesson of what happened to the area during WWII. Grab a Zapiekanka – an open sandwich – to keep you going until your evening meal.

Once you're there, why not stay for the evening and eat at one of the restaurants in the area followed by drinks off Plac Nowy – a buzzing square with eccentric bars.

Wawel Castle

You can spend all day at Wawel Castle, with its many majestic rooms, gardens and courtyards. But if you're short on time, skip the tours and wander around yourself. Don't miss the crown jewels, the state rooms or Lost Wawel – the basement that shows how the castle has evolved.

Most tickets are issued in advance and have an exact arrival time, which means you need to plan ahead.

Schindler's Factory

If you've seen Schindler's List, you'll know about this factory. It was the brainchild of a German businessman who used it to save 1,200 Jewish employees being sent to concentration camps. It's now an exhibition that shows what life was like during the war.

It's about a 20-miute walk from Plac Nowy, so a worthwhile part of your visit to Kazimierz.

Wieliczka Salt Mine

For something completely different, take a 15km trip out of the city to the Wieliczka Salt Mine UNESCO World Heritage Site. It started producing salt in the 13th century and spans 300km. Explore 3.5km of the mine and see rooms, chapels and sculptures entirely carved out of salt that tell the history of the quarry.
