Travel Bloggers to Watch 2014

These guys make us want to travel. Even more.

Never beaten on price

We love a good travel blog at Holiday Extras, and here you’ll find five of our favourite new travel bloggers to watch this year. From thrill-seeking and travel tips to no-nonsense financial advice, you’re sure to find a writer below who appeals to your inner globetrotter.

Backpackingman - Jonny Duncan

Jonny had a nomadic childhood and has been on the road since 1997 himself, but only recently started to share his experiences on his blog, Backpackingman. It’s a crisp and clean looking site with great images, and here you’ll find honest, detailed tales of adventure from across Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Europe and South America. He also likes his food, and provides some useful travel advice too.

The Drifter Journals - JR Riel

In his Drifter Journals, JR Riel writes from his unique Polynesian and Southeast Asian islander viewpoint. Born on Molokai, Hawaii, JR has inherited his ancestors’ adventurous spirit, and travels Asia and Oceania writing with real insight about about the food, language and culture. This is a stylish blog with cool typography and huge images, as well as some interesting guest posts.

The Johnstons’ One World One Year - Britnee and Mark Johnston

With their cheerful-looking blog Britnee and Mark from Utah are sharing their year-long journey across the globe and hoping to inspire others to quit their jobs and do the same. They set off in May 2014 and are planning to take in Japan, China, Mongolia, Russia, Europe, Nepal, Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Chile and Peru. An ‘average’ couple, Britnee had never really travelled before she met action man hubbie Mark, but it was she who caught the travel bug bad and convinced him to sell up and head off. Reading their posts, you’ll feel like they’re friends telling you about their big trip.

Nomad Wallet - Deia B

Nomad Wallet contains practical, snappy and very useful travel advice designed to help normal people afford to travel more. Posts are about saving, earning cash while travelling, investing, budgeting and living more simply. Somewhat unusually for a travel blog, Deia is not on an eternal round-the-world trip, she works in real estate. It’s very American and very addictive.

My Wanderlist - Brad Bernard

Probably more well known than the bloggers above, extreme traveller Brad Bernard is on a personal quest to find the most outrageous and undiscovered experiences in the big wide world. He is constantly tackling ridiculous challenges across Africa, the Middle East and Asia. Despite the potential for sensationalism and Jackass-ness, it’s fascinating and well-written stuff. Look away if you don’t want to read about Brad dancing with corpses, living with sea gypsies, or being kidnapped.
