Coronavirus, China and Travel Insurance

Due to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak, the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) advises against all travel to the Hubei province, and 'all but essential travel' to mainland China (not including Hong Kong and Macao). For full up-to-date information, please visit the FCO's website.

What is coronavirus?

The coronavirus, also known as COVID-19, originated in Wuhan, in the Hubei province of China. It is a contagian which can cause pneumonia, with its symptoms reported as coughing, high fever and respiratory difficulty. For more information concerning specific symptoms and preventative measures, please consult the World Health Organisation (WHO).

As you will be aware, the recent outbreak of the coronavirus has gained considerable media attention, which has led to some uncertainty within the travel industry. There has been a heightened concern around the status of flights, holidays and the potential impact on your travel insurance policies. We have created, and are regularly updating, an information page that will address your queries regarding any effect coronavirus could have on your travel insurance policy.

What does the FCO advise?

Aside from the 'all but essential travel' warning, the FCO have given the following instructions for travellers:

  • If you're currently in China and have the ability to leave, you should do so immediately
  • Chinese authorities have implemented a number of control and quarantine measures to contain the coronavirus by enforcing mass entry and exit controls in towns and villages

Hong Kong and Macau

Hong Kong and Macau are two localities separate from mainland China in terms of goverment and currency, however they are both a part of China. Currently, the FCO have not deterred travel to these locations but have released the following information regarding travel:

  • A 14-day mandatory quarantine measures in place for new arrivals to Hong Kong from mainland China
  • All-non Hong Kong residents who have been in South Korea recently will be denied entry to Hong Kong

How to protect yourself against coronavirus

While there are currently no cures for the coronavirus, there are certain basic hygeine measures you can adopt as to prevent contraction and transmission:

  • Regular hand washing
  • Covering your mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing
  • Thoroughly cooking meat and eggs
  • Avoid close contact with anyone showing symptoms of respiratory illnesses, such as coughing and sneezing
  • If you suspect you have symptoms of coronavirus, or have had contact with someone who has it, ring NHS '111' for further advice
