Is interrailing safe?

Interrailing can be safe if you take the right precautions, many of which you would normally do at home anyway. These are things such as looking after your possessions and always knowing where you're going.

Additionally, there are plenty of guides written by interrailers who have gone before you and with the right planning, you can prepare for any emergencies or problems you may face.

Taking out travel insurance is advisable, to cover you in the event of missed flights, lost possessions or medical treatment.

Top tips to keep safe when interrailing

Theft:

Theft is the largest problem in European cities through pick-pocketing and bag thefts. However, you can take precautions against bag theft by keeping your possessions on your body and avoiding pickpockets by keeping them under your clothes, or deep within your backpacks.

Hotel Safety:

Many hotels charge extra for locks and valuables storage. You should take your own lock when travelling so that you can keep your possessions safe whilst on day trips or when you go out at night.

Location:

You should ensure that your hostel is not in a dangerous or run-down location and avoid walking into dark alleyways at night. You should also ensure that you know where you're going at all times and have a map with you should you get lost.

Trains:

You should be particularly aware when travelling on sleeper trains as falling asleep can leave your luggage unguarded and there may be more danger of crime on night trains than during the day.

Communication:

You should ensure that you give your family or friends up-to-date information about your whereabouts so that they can be alerted if anything is wrong or if your travel plans change.
