How do I declare my condition?

Declaring pre-existing medical conditions like deafness is a simple process. When making a quote, you will be asked a brief set of questions pertaining to your general medical history, the answer to which are handled in strict accordance with data protection laws. It's important to answer honestly, as based on the answers you give, we will be able to return an accurate quote for your policy.

How do we calculate the price of your policy?

In order to give you an accurate quote, our insurance experts take into account a number of factors:

  • Level of risk - The nature and severity of your condition is determined from the answers given at the screening process.
  • Age - Your age is also considered when producing a quote, as generally speaking, the likelihood of having to make a claim increases the older a traveller is.
  • Destination -This factor plays an important role in accurately determining your quote as in certain countries, healthcare and emergency medical treatment can be extremely expensive. For this reason, you may find that the policy price to such a destination will be slightly higher, to accomodate for more costly emergency medical expenses.

Travelling with Deafness

Overcoming the language barrier - If you are travelling to a country where English is not so widely spoken, then your ability to lip read will naturally be more limited. There are however some helpful tools like Google voice translate, which can decipher what's being said and translate it into english text on the screen. It's also a good idea to have a pen and paper handy for written communication. In situations where none of the above methods work, using gestures and even drawing pictures can be a surprisingly effective way of communicating.

Don't be afraid to ask for help - Unfortunately many places aren't adequately equipped to cater for deaf people. For example, many train stations may not have enough visual aids to communicate information, or may make important announcements only over the tannoy. In such circumstances, asking for help from staff or other travellers can be effective in getting the information you need for you journey and avoiding stress.
