Missing your flight is every traveller's nightmare. However, from traffic problems to hold-ups at check-in, there is a large number of unforeseen circumstances that could potentially lead to missing your flight. Many people don't know what happens when you miss your flight, though, and this is important if you're going to get the cover that you need.

What happens if I miss my flight?

A "two-hour rule" is normally implemented by airlines. This means that if you arrive at the airport within two hours of when your flight was due, you'll be able to get the next available flight with the same airline free of charge.

The first thing that you should do is call your airport. If you call the airport before the gate closes, they may be able to change your flight. However, there are charges that may be implemented if you're later than two hours after your flight was due.

If you're within the airport, you'll be directed to a phone to get in contact with a member of the airline that you were flying on where you'll be escorted back to arrivals. You should then go to a ticket desk and arrange another flight, although some airlines may charge for this.

This is why it's important to have travel insurance for missed flights. That way, you may be covered for any extra expenses that may occur as a result of something unforeseen and out of your control happening.
