For those that aren't frequent flyers, passing through security can be an anxious prospect. There are a number of things that can put people off security, such as full body scanners and the number of restrictions to luggage. However, security is not as scary as it may seem and this guide will show you exactly what to expect so that you can feel prepared.

How to Speed up going through Security

Having your documents ready in advance will help as you already know that you'll be needing them, so having them handy will allow you to move past the people still searching around for their documents.

Arriving early will allow you to have plenty of time to go through security and avoids you being stuck in a long queue of people waiting to go past security last minute. If you arrive in plenty of time, getting by security fairly quickly shouldn't be a problem.

Wearing easily removable clothing can help in reducing your time whilst going through security. You'll be asked to remove any jewellery or belts, so if you can avoid these, do so.

Bag Scanners

Firstly, your bag will be scanned on a moving conveyor belt. You should prepare your bag for this whilst you're queuing by taking any electronics or liquids out of it. The first things you see at security will be places to bin your water bottles and liquids if required and you should do this before progressing. Then, you should place any remaining liquids in the provided clear bags.

When you get to the conveyor belt, you should place your bag in a tray that will be provided. Electronics will need to go in a separate tray. This will then go through the scanner. If there's a problem, your bag will pass through to a further scanning system, where your bag will be searched.

Body Scanners

Most UK airports opt for traditional body scanners. You may need to take your shoes off at some airports and you should remove all metal such as watches, jewellery as well as money from your person. Then, you should walk through the scanner. If it beeps, you may be subjected to an additional search. You may have two options: to pass through the full body scanner or be physically searched. At many international airports such as in the US, full body scanners have replaced traditional ones. To use these, you should place your feet on the dots and raise your arms for a couple of moments.

How long will it take me to go through Security?

The time it takes to go past security can vary each time which is why it's important and advised to get to the airport in plenty of time. A good rule to stick by is to get to the airport at least 2 hours before your scheduled departure time, as this will allow you plenty of time in case of any incidents or delays at the airport.
