Bali's Volcanoes

Bali is a holiday destination unlike any other, with pristine beaches and rainforests to enjoy and explore to your heart's content. However, it does not come without its dangers. Part of Bali's beauty can be incredibly dangerous, but with the right knowledge and precautions, you can make your trip stress (and disaster) free!

How many volcanoes are in Bali?

There are three volcanoes in Bali alone and many more throughout Indonesia. In fact, Indonesia has more active volcanoes than any other country in the world, 76 in total and many more inactive ones dotting their landscapes. These volcanoes have erupted over 1,171 times since records started to be kept.

The three main volcanoes in Bali are:

  • Mount Batur (1,717m)
  • Bratan (2,276m)
  • Mount Agung (3,031m)

Volcanoes are referred to as Gungung in Bali, which translates to "fire mountain."

What is the name of the active volcano in Bali?

The most active volcano in Bali is Bali's biggest, Mount Agung. It spewed both ash and lava during its last eruption, though it's not the only active volcano in Indonesia. Despite its active status, the volcano only has a level 3 warning alert, meaning that there is a chance of a minor eruption. However, business, for the most part, runs as normal.

To be extra safe, its best to stay away from the volcano entirely, but there are many tours to visit Mount Agung if you wish to do so. To further protect yourself and your family, you'll also want to get reliable cover that will protect you, should you need compensation for a wide variety of activities and disasters.

When was the last time Bali's volcano erupted?

Bali's Mount Agung last erupted on 21 November 2017, but this has been ongoing. Experts say that the recent eruption in July of 2018 is considered to be a continuation of the 2017 eruption.
