What foods should you eat and avoid in Mexico?

When in Mexico, it is less about what food you should avoid, and more about where you should avoid buying it from. You should try to avoid eating food from buffets or street vendors as it may not be prepared in a safe way and been left out in the heat for too long, especially dairy products such as milk and cheese. You should also avoid eating runny eggs or undercooked bushmeat as this could carry lots of diseases, even if you've had all of the necessary vaccinations.

However, this shouldn't put you off from trying your Mexican favourites such as enchiladas, chilaquiles (a breakfast food made from tortillas and salsa) and tacos. This selection of tortillas, spicy salsa and refried beans is a culinary delight for most people. Although mostly available in the UK, trying these flavours in their home country is a different experience altogether.

Can I drink the water in Mexico?

You should be very careful when drinking tap water, brushing your teeth or consuming any food products washed in water, such as pasta and rice. Even if your hotel claims that the water provided has been purified, you should think about boiling it first as you may still come into contact with microbes that your body isn't used to, which could potentially be harmful. It's advisable to take out comprehensive travel insurance in caseof illness or medical emergencies, as this can cover any treatment or medical costs you may incur.

Do I need vaccinations when visiting Mexico?

The main vaccinations you should receive are tetanus, typhoid and hepatitis A before visiting Mexico. Some travellers may need extra vaccinations, which can be found on the NHS FitforTravel website.
