UK airport passengers increase

Plane Taking Off

Passenger numbers at BAA's UK airports were up slightly, by 1.5%, to 10.8 million in November, although Stansted fell by 6.3%.

Of the major airports, passenger numbers at Heathrow were up by 2.4% and at Gatwick by 6.2%. But passengers at Stansted fell by a hefty 6.3%, largely due to cutbacks to their winter schedule by Ryanair and Air Berlin says BAA. Regional airport Southampton saw passenger numbers grow by 2%.

There were also mixed results for BAA's airports in Scotland. Passengers at Edinburgh airport in November were up by 4.4%, mainly because of an increase in European scheduled flights. But passenger numbers at Glasgow airport were down by 3.2%, and at Aberdeen airport by 2.3%.

"Among the key markets, it was the longer haul routes that performed the strongest," reports BAA. An increase in passengers from the UK and Europe encouraged by the weakness of the US dollar helped North Atlantic traffic to rise by 5.9%. Overall other long haul routes recorded an increase of 7%.

But passengers on UK domestic flights were down by 4.3%. Passengers on European scheduled flights were up very slightly by 0.9%, while European charter traffic remained the same.

The total number of air transport movements at BAA airports was down by 1.2% in November, with BAA's Scottish airports down by 4.1%. Cargo tonnage was up by 6.4% at Heathrow, but Edinburgh was the only other BAA airport where freight traffic increased.
