Thomas Cook Airlines expands at Newcastle

[December 22nd 2008]

Thomas Cook Airlines is adding a third aircraft to its base at Newcastle airport to offer a wider choice of holidays.

With the addition of the Boeing 757-200, capable of carrying 235 passengers, Thomas Cook will be the largest package holiday operator from Newcastle airport. The new plane means that approximately 70,000 new seats will be available from Newcastle for summer 2009.

Among the new destinations on offer from Thomas Cook Airlines from Newcastle will be the Greek islands of Santorini and Skiathos. Another of the Greek islands, Kefalonia, will also get its own dedicated Thomas Cook flight.

Thanks to the new aircraft, other destinations such as Larnaca will benefit from two flights a week. This will allow 10 or 11 night holidays as well as the more traditional seven or 14 night holidays. The destinations to be served by the new plane include Dalaman, Barcelona Reus, Sharm el Sheikh, Zante, Crete, Tenerife, Paphos, and Bodrum.

“We already have an extensive flying programme from Newcastle Airport, which takes holidaymakers to more than 30 destinations. I’m delighted that we have been able to introduce an additional aircraft to serve the region and to offer even more holiday choice. This will make travel even easier and more convenient for the people of the North East,” says Thomas Cook UK & Ireland CEO of Mainstream Travel, Pete Constanti.

Newcastle Airport chief executive, David Laws, adds: “Thomas Cook adding a third aircraft to its Newcastle base is excellent news for our airport and the North East. It ensures that the people of the region can book with confidence, as Thomas Cook is known by all as a well-trusted travel company. We know that the additional capacity will prove very popular with our local holidaymakers.”
