With friendly, efficient staff that make travelling abroad a trouble-free experience, it came as no surprise that East Midlands Airport walked away from the inaugural Holiday Extras Customers' Awards with the runner up award for best airport.

Opened in 1965, the Castle Donington-based airport, judged to be the UK's 10th busiest in terms of passenger traffic, is part of the Manchester Airports Group and serves more than 100 worldwide destinations for travellers from the East Midlands region.

Some of Europe's biggest airlines operate out of East Midlands Airport, with such operators as easyJet, Jet2.com and Ryanair offering a host of services.

East Midlands Airport's commercial director, Stephen Turner, commented on being named runner up as best airport at the Holiday Extras Customers' Awards: "We are delighted to have been announced as runner up in the category for best airport. To have received this level of recognition by our customers is a huge achievement. The airport continually looks at our passengers' entire journey, delivering improvements and ensuring that the customer is at the heart of everything we do."
