The new check-in area at Heathrow's extended Terminal 4 has reached the topping out stage and is expected to open in late 2009.

The traditional topping out ceremony marks the building reaching its full height, and is part of the ambitious £4 billion plan to create world class facilities at the much-criticised airport.

“The topping out of the new check in area marks a major milestone in the transformation of Terminal 4. We have ambitious plans to improve the passenger experience by creating more room for check in, with 33 new check in desks and a light, spacious forecourt and plaza area," explains BAA interim capital director, Rob Stewart.

The overhaul of Terminal 4 will also include a new baggage handling system, renovated departure lounges and piers and the construction of two new aircraft stands to accommodate the new Airbus A380 superjumbo.

Heathrow's owners, BAA, say that the entire airport will be refurbished, redesigned or rebuilt over the next five years.
