Dartford Crossing

New charges for using the Dartford River Crossing were introduced on November 15.

It now costs £1.50 for a car to cross during the daytime and either £2.00 or £3.70 for a lorry, depending on its size.

People living in the Dartford and Thurrock council areas can apply for a discount scheme which will entitle them to 50 free crossings a year and a charge of 20p for each subsequent crossing.

All vehicles can use the Dartford Tunnel and QEII Bridge free of charge between 10pm and 6am.

There will also be discounts for DART-Tag holders who use the crossing during the day. The new customer centre on site has extended opening hours to handle applications for the Local Resident, DART-Tag and Vehicle Exemption schemes.

The crossing over the Thames, which links Kent and Essex, is one of Europe's busiest and forms a vital link in the M25.

The Dartford toll was meant to end in 2003 when the bridge and tunnel had been paid for, but was controversially retained by the Department for Transport as a congestion charge.
