Where to go on Holiday in May

These are the best destinations for holidays in May.

Never beaten on price

Want to know where to travel in May? All things seem possible in May - this month usually brings warmer weather across Europe, and in hotter climes it's a good time to visit before the height of summer makes travel uncomfortably hot. May is a great month to travel within the UK, or to visit continental resorts before the summer crowds set in; and it's dry season across much of the southern hemisphere. To make sure you get the most for your money, check out the best value summer destinations and read on for our top picks for May holidays.

Europe

Palma de Mallorca

Palma de Mallorca Palma de Mallorca in May

A firm favourite with our customers, the resort town of Palma de Mallorca is a popular choice in May for good reason. With its sandy beaches, family-friendly facilities, and string of seaside hotels catering to every type of traveller, you really can't go wrong. May is still early for tourists, so if you don't like crowds, it is a great time to visit. You can expect occasional showers, but in general, May brings sunny skies and water warm enough for a dip!

What to See and Do in Palma de Mallorca in May:

The sunny sands are undoubtedly the biggest attraction, but we suggest leaving the resort area for at least a day or two during your holiday to experience history come to life. The Palau de l'Almudaina is a must-see - this former Islamic fort became a royal residence at the end of the 13th century and is still the official residence of the King of Spain. (Although this is mostly symbolic.) Palma de Mallorca's Catedral is a stunning architectural gem, designed by Antoni Gaudi of Barcelona fame. The cathedral is open daily, and will be a highlight of any trip - look out for the gargoyles! Kids and adults alike will love Castell de Bellver, a 13th-century castle that you can explore and get great shots from the rooftop. The castle is easily accessible by local bus, but is also a stopping point along the open-top tourist bus route.

Mallorca Festivals in May:

On the 1st of May, the May Fair (Festes de Maig) comes to neighbouring Ses Salines in honour of Saint Anastasius. The town is famed for its salt and honey (so do pick some up to take back home) but during the May Fair you'll also be able to be able to catch spectacular flower parades, equestrian shows, buy products from local artists and craftsmen, and attend traditional music events.

Faro, Portgual

Faro, Portgual in May. Faro, Portgual in May.

For holiday-makers who love the convenience of a resort, but long for cultural immersion - Algarve's capital city fits the bill. Warm weather, a historic center, and food that rivals the best of them, Faro is the kind of destination people can't stop returning to. In May, Faro has reliably sunny weather, but the temperature is still mildly warm with highs of 23C. May is a great month to visit, before the flocks of tourists and high temperatures take over the city.

What to see and do in Faro in May:

In a city with a history spanning back to the 4th-century bc, you can expect a trip to the past around every cobblestoned corner. You'll want to start in the Old Town, a fascinating section of Faro where 16th-century grandeur melds into modernity. Begin at the Municipal Museum, exploring the collection of art and artefacts which tell the story of Faro's past and give visitors a nice overview of what the Old Town may have been like centuries ago. After brushing up on your history, we'd recommend exploring the Old Town from the central Vila-Adentro - from here you can visit Faro Cathedral, the 18th century Bishop's Palace and meander along the winding streets for traditional fare.

Don't leave Faro without a visit to the Ilha Deserta - Deserted Island. Located a short ferry ride from the city (ferry services leave approximately every 1.5 hours) this uninhabited island is the gem of the city. You'll definitely feel as if you travelled further than you have as you enjoy the stunning beaches - which in May, you'll seemingly have to yourself.

Faro Festivals in May:

Every May in the neighbouring Algarve town of Portimao, boating enthusiasts from around the world come to watch the spectacular sporting event called the F1 Power Boat World Championship. Enjoy the show from this coastal town as the best drivers on the planet compete against one another on the azure waters.

Kerkyra - Corfu

Kerkyra, Corfu in May. Kerkyra, Corfu in May.

Kerkyra, commonly known as Corfu to most Brits, is a Greek island on the Ionian Sea. The gorgeous weather, traditional foods, and beautiful beaches have made the island one of Greece's most popular islands. The main city is a common port-of-call for Mediterranean cruise ships, and the tourist infrastructure is well set up for the hoards of visitors who come through every summer. May is the very beginning of tourist season on Kerkyra, making it one of the best month's of the year to visit if avoiding queues is a priority.

What to see and do in Kerkyra in May:

The charming Old Town is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site, and one of the island's main attractions. Due to its close ties with Venice, the architecture will have you wondering if you arrived on Kerkyra or accidently stumbled onto the City of Canals instead. The winding cobbled paths, brightly coloured window shutters, and fresh markets selling produce and local products such as olive oil, almost make it seem like the area was created for Instagrammers. While picture perfect, the Old Town was not built with vehicular traffic in mind (there were no cars yet), therefore the area is mostly car-free and easy to walk around and explore - although we'd recommend comfortable footwear for the uneven stones along the way.

While food and history are two things the Greeks do very well, most visitors to Greece come for one very important attraction - the beach. You'll have your pick in the island, but we'd highly recommend that you check out Íssos beach. Surrounded by tumbling sand dunes and juniper trees, Íssos offers miles of sands and waterfront scenery. This beach is more on the wild side so you won't find much in the way of restaurants - the perfect time to pack a traditionally Greek picnic and enjoy the spoils.

Kerkyra Festivals in May:

May is one of the best months of the year to visit Kerkyra if you love festivals. On May 8th, you can take part in the traditional Kassiopi festival - a day which celebrates the miraculous healing of a local blind boy. The festivities begin at church but are quickly transformed into processions through the city, with cultural events and traditional folk dances by the harbour.

North America

Toronto, Canada

Toronto, Canada in May. Toronto, Canada in May.

Toronto is Canada's best-kept secret that everyone knows about. Many visitors are surprised to learn that Ontario's capital is one of the biggest multi-cultural cities in the entire world. There is no better way to see Toronto than by foot, a pure pleasure for the senses as you walk through diverse neighbourhoods - with access to a global array of food everywhere you look. The main tourist centre offers walking maps; we highly suggest you pick one up or download a self-guided tour app and become your own guide for the day. In May, temperatures are cool and the city is just coming to life but tourist activities are well underway.

What to see and do in Toronto in May:

The CN Tower is the most recognisable landmark in Toronto and well worth the lift to the top - rewarding visitors with breathtaking views over the cityscape and surrounding lakes. We'd also recommend a visit to Casa Loma, a museum and mansion that is not only stunning but provides an interesting look at the city's history through the life of one of its richest financiers.

It's also worth noting that the famed Niagara Falls is less than two hours south of the city and easily accessible by car or coach tour - the latter of which can be booked at the tourist centre or online with Viator. If you have the time, cross the border to the US side where you can get a riverside view of the falls or even visit the historical American city of Buffalo, New York. (The home of Buffalo Wings!)

Toronto Festivals in May:

If you visit Toronto in May, it is worth planning your visit around the incredible Carassauga Festival. Located in the suburb of Mississauga, Carassauga is like a mini-World's Fair. Over 70 countries have pavilions on display where visitors can sample food, attend cultural events, and enjoy a variety of entertainment from around the world.

Orlando, Florida

Orlando, Florida in May. Orlando, Florida in May.

Ask a group of Brits where they'd most like to visit on holiday in America and Orlando, Florida is almost always on top. Home of year-round warm weather, sunshine, and Disney World - the happiest place on earth is ideal for families, couples, and any fan of Mickey. With Disney World, Universal Studios, and Sea World all within reach, it's no surprise that the theme parks rule this Floridian city. If you are travelling with children, May is a great time to visit Orlando. Schools in America are mostly still in session, and queues for the Magic Kingdom are easier to manage in May than the more popular month of August.

What to see and do in Orlando in May:

Let's be honest, if you want to go to Orlando it is highly unlikely you are visiting without one of the world famous theme parks being the main focus. Depending on how much time you have, you may choose to stick with one or park-hop throughout your holiday. We'd generally recommend at least 3 days for Disney World, 2 days for Universal Studios, and one day for Sea World. It's worth mentioning that Sea World has become slightly controversial after the release of the documentary 'Blackfish'. We suggest doing some research before booking tickets, to decide for yourself whether the experience is something you'd be comfortable with.

If you are going to make the trek all the way to Florida, we'd recommend spending at least one day experiencing the local scenery away from Cinderella's castle. Spend a day at Orlando Wetland Park to feel like you've gone back to the time of dinosaurs in all its swampy, alligator-laden charm. Rent a kayak or hop aboard an authentic propeller boat for an experience you'll never forget.

Orlando Festivals in May:

The end of May brings Megacon to Orlando - a four-day comic book festival at the Orange County Convention Center. Expect some of the genre's biggest comic book stars to make an appearance, gaming exhibitions, and a diverse group of attendees in cosplay dedicated to their favourite characters.

Bridgetown, Barbados

Bridgetown, Barbados in May. Bridgetown, Barbados in May.

Bridgetown is typically a city that most tourists pass through from their cruise ship or the airport - and very few, unfortunately, make the time to explore. The capital city of Barbados is commonly just referred to as "Town", is the most populated and home to much of the island's shopping and commercial activities. The downtown area is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site, and one of the Caribbean's most beautiful colonial-era gems. In May, the heat is already in full-force, with an average high temperature of 30C and plenty of sunshine. A great choice if you are after an enviable suntan and days lounging at some of the planet's most beautiful beaches.

What to see and do in Bridgetown in May:

While Bridgetown's historic downtown is worth an afternoon of your time, Bridgetown is one city where we'd wholeheartedly recommend going straight to the beach. Carlisle Bay is one of the most beautiful beaches on Barbados, as well as the Caribbean, and is a must-see when visiting in May. The waters are crystal-clear, the sands are soft and post-card worthy, and the beach is well-maintained for visitors and local wildlife. Book a snorkelling tour to see the famous sea turtles up-close or simply rent a lounge chair for the day and soak up all that tropical sun. If you are a certified diver, you can book a diving tour from Carlisle Bay to explore shipwrecks just off the coast.

We wouldn't be doing our jobs if we didn't mention the Mount Gay Rum Distillery . The most famous rum distillery in the world, it is a must-see attraction in Bridgetown if you enjoy a tipple on occasion or would like to find out more about the history and process of creating rum. After you see how the rum is made, there are ample opportunities to sample a range of premium rums and purchase a bottle or two to take back home.

Bridgetown Festivals in May:

May in Bridgetown is the start of the annual Crop Over festival - an event that traditionally celebrated the end of the sugar seasons, a crop that was once the main export of Barbados. In modern times, Crop Over is a popular time for Bajans who live abroad to come back to the island for the huge carnival-like celebrations. Expect traditional costumes, colourful parades, and tons of Calypso music and dancing. This is the one event in Bridgetown not to miss!

South America

Lima, Peru

Lima, Peru in May. Lima, Peru in May.

Lima is home to over 9 million people and offers visitors a chance to see the contrasting sides of Peruvian life. From the glittering high-rise buildings in downtown to the dilapidated shanty towns in bordering districts - Lima is as eye-opening as it is exhilarating. Foodies will be right at home in Lima, as the capital is home to a growing trend of back-to-roots, traditional Peruvian fare and history aficionados will fall in love with the 16th-century buildings that still dot the tree-lined boulevards. Lima's temperatures begin to cool down in May, with an average high of 22C - comfortable, warm, and ideal for visitors who don't like extremes.

What to see and do in Lima in May:

Lima's Government Palace is to Peruvians what Buckingham Palace is to the English. The official residence of Peru's President, a history dating back to the 1500's, and the go-to place if you'd like to see the changing of the guards - which happens at noon daily. Churches in Lima are a dime a dozen, most dating back in the colonial era when they were built to honour patron saints. Each of these historic places of worship offers a unique look into the country's past, but Lima's Church of San Francisco is the one you'll want to fit into your itinerary. The church is one of the best preserved in the city, despite being around five centuries old, but its the catacombs (the final resting place of over 75,000 bodies) that bring the tourists to this church in particular.

Lima is definitely not short on incredible museums and historical buildings, so definitely check those out, but for something a little different during your visit we'd recommend a day at Miraflores. As Lima is affectionately nicknamed the "Garden City", no visitor should pass through the city without enjoying the lush landscaped parks and gardens - Miraflores offers the best of the bunch. Set along a 6-mile stretch of coast overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Miraflores is great for a walk in the fresh ocean air where you can enjoy incredible views or even participate in local pastimes such as parasailing off the cliff-side.

Lima Festivals in May:

In May, all across Peru, locals celebrate the Festival of the Crosses (Fiesta de las Cruces). Crosses are carried in processions, from church to church, followed by religious festivities. Even if you aren't religious, the pageantry is incredible to see first-hand.

Buenos Aires, Argentina

Buenos Aires, Argentina in May. Buenos Aires, Argentina in May.

Birthplace to the Tango, Buenos Aires is a city with a unique energy that many visitors say is unlike any other city they've been to. With an architectural style and layout similar to many European cities, on its surface Buenos Aires doesn't feel like a city on another continent altogether. But Buenos Aires is a city of surprises, and will undoubtedly capture your heart with its friendly locals, incredible food, and strong cultural identity. In May, Buenos Aires shines - with a mild average high of 19C but plenty of sunshine.

What to see and do in Buenos Aires in May:

For many visitors to Buenos Aires, the city is synonymous with the film Evita. The Presidential Palace is, therefore, a popular tourist pilgrimage spot to see the balcony where the Perons famously spoke to the Argentinean people and Madonna sang her famous song. As the birthplace of Tango, it is imperative to see this typical ballroom dance at one of the city's popular social clubs. We'd recommend Tango Cool, a social club that welcomes beginners and is a little less traditional with dancing etiquette.

If you are a sports fan, Buenos Aires will be a home away from home. From catching a game to see Boca at Bombonera Stadium to a polo match at the world-famous Palermo, you'll be spoiled for choice.

Buenos Aires Festivals in May:

Every year on the 25th of May, crowds of people flock to the Plazo de Mayo for the Aniversario de la Revolución de Mayo - a festival celebrating the May revolution in 1810 which was a catalyst for Argentina's independence from the Spanish crown. Expect patriotism aplenty, and many group renditions of the National Anthem from the crowds.

Bogota, Columbia

Bogota, Columbia in May. Bogota, Columbia in May.

Bogota has a bad rap, but most assumptions that people have of this Colombian city are incredibly out-dated. Twenty years ago, it was well-deserved - but the Columbian government has since done an excellent job fixing infrastructure, drastically lowering crime rates, and disbanding drug cartels. Today Bogota has a flourishing art scene and has become a leader on the continent for promoting arts and culture. While crime hasn't been completely eradicated, (no such place exists) tourist areas in Bogota, and Colombia as a whole, are perfectly safe. Temperatures in May are mild, with an average high of 19C - it's worth nothing that this month falls within Colombia's rainy season. Nothing we aren't used to, right?

What to see and do in Bogota in May:

The art scene is thriving in Bogota, and we highly recommend exploring all the city has to offer on a small-group walking tour. From street art to galleries, art has become an outlet for political, social, and economic discourse for both the older generations and young academics - and the result is extraordinary. Colombian street food is also an avenue we'd recommend exploring. Notoriously heavy, (often deep-fried foods, beans, and rice) the street food in Bogota is worth throwing in an extra workout at your hotel for.

For a breath of fresh air from the city, you'll need to head to the Monserrate funicular and make your way to the top of Monserrate Mountain. An important pilgrimage destination for centuries, Monserrate is famous for both its religious monuments depicting the crucifixion of Christ and outstanding views over the city below.

Bogota Festivals in May:

For a city with arts and culture on the rise, it isn't a surprise that May brings along another fixture of the scene to Bogota - fashion. Typically the third week of May, Bogota Fashion Week takes over the capital with shows and exhibitions from the country's most distinguished designers. The main events are staged at the iconic El Dorado Airport - but festivities take place all over the city throughout the week.

Africa

Hurghada, Egypt

Hurghada, Egypt in May. Hurghada, Egypt in May.

More interested in warm weather, stunning beaches, and well-equipped resorts for your May holiday? Hurghada has been a popular destination for decades because of its family-friendly facilities and warm sea temperatures. Diving in the Red Sea region is world-renown and well worth the trip alone if you are an avid diver. In May, the average high-temperature clocks in at an impressively hot 33C. May temperatures are cooler than the summer months which follow, but also much more manageable for those who aren't as comfortable with extreme heat.

What to see and do in Hurghada in May:

For families, Hurghada has an infinite amount of activities that the adults and little ones will both thoroughly enjoy. Makadi Water World is Egypt's largest waterpark, boasting over 50 waterslides, splash pools for younger children, and truly amazing views of the surrounding desert and sea landscapes. Speaking of the landscape, you'll want to explore both sides of Hurghada during your stay. Take a boat cruise for an afternoon of snorkelling in the crystal-clear sea, and if you're lucky you'll spot colourful fish, turtles, and even a dolphin or two. Back on land, the desert awaits with opportunities to sample the various transport options - will you take a quad bike or camel to explore the sands?

Did you know that you can take a day-trip to Cairo and see the world famous Pyramids? If you don't mind a long day out - many local operators offer visitors staying in Hurghada the chance to see one of the last world wonders without extending their holiday. Packages usually involve a short flight to Cairo, followed by a guided tour of the major attractions.

Note: After a terrorist incident in early January involving several tourists at a Hurghada hotel, Egyptian authorities have promised to increase security measures for visitors to the country. We suggest checking the latest recommendations from the Foreign Travel Advice website. As of February 2017, there were no recommended restrictions on travel to the region.

Hurghada Festivals in May:

There are no major festivals in Hurghada during May so make the most of the off-season!

Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi in May. Abu Dhabi in May.

Abu Dhabi is pure magic. This culturally rich capital has it all; from beaches to desert exploration to family-friendly attractions, and the weather isn't too bad either. As the capital city of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), it is a modern oasis that fully embraces its traditional past - giving visitors the unique opportunity to relax, explore, and learn about new cultures all in one go. May is one of the best months to visit Abu Dhabi because hotel prices are lower and crowds are more manageable yet for those seeking hot weather the average high temperature of 39C won't disappoint.

What to see and do in Abu Dhabi in May:

While many visitors will be drawn their resort-side pools, we'd highly recommend exploring Abu Dhabi's unique Gulf culture. Start at Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, one of the most incredible mosques in the world - which is open to everyone outside hours of worship. Built with over 100,000 tonnes of marble and complimented with inlaid gold and crystal, this stunning architectural wonder is a work of art. You'll need a day to give this attraction the time its worth, and we suggest taking one of the free English walking tours which will give you a background on Islam and the mosque itself. Visitors should be appropriately covered, and women can rent special modest clothing for the day to ensure they met the strict moral guidelines. A visit to the gleaming white Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is well worth it.

Abu Dhabi Festivals in May:

In May, you won't want to miss the "Festival in the Park", a unique family-friendly festival celebrating the culture of the United Arab Emirates. Peruse the art exhibitions, sit in on educational seminars, and join in on fun activities that will give you a much better overview of Abu Dhabi's unique heritage.

Sal, Cape Verde

Sal, Cape Verde in May. Sal, Cape Verde in May.

We -love- Cape Verde, but if you are going to narrow down your holiday plans in May to one island, you can't go wrong with Sal. Nicknamed the "Sunniest Island", you can expect golden sands and turquoise waters - with a touch of unique topography such as dormant volcanoes. In May, the average high temperature is 26C - not too hot, yet warm enough for all your island escapades.

What to see and do in Sal in May:

While we generally recommend leaving the beaches behind (at least occasionally) while on holiday, we think it'll be hard to convince anyone with Sal's gorgeous sands. With watersports, turtle hatcheries, and amazing snorkelling - the beach is exactly where you should go. Santa Maria is our favourite Sal beach, offering clean white sands and plenty of amenities for visitors. You'll definitely want to eat a few meals at a traditional Cape Verdean restaurant - the seafood is to die for.

Sal Festivals in May:

In Mid-May, the Gamboa Festival comes to the island - the largest music festival in Cape Verde. Parades, local musicians, traditional costumes, and plenty fo dancing make this incredible festival a must-see.

Asia

Bangkok, Thailand

Bangkok, Thailand in May. Bangkok, Thailand in May.

Dreaming of a holiday filled with mouth-watering street food, gleaming golden temples, and amazing shopping? You can't go wrong with Bangkok. Locals are friendly, the nightlife is outstanding, and you are guaranteed amazing surprises around every corner. May temperatures in Bangkok are hot with average highs of 39C. To manage the fiery heat, we'd recommend a day trip outside the city to one of Thailand's most beautiful beaches.

What to see and do in Bangkok in May:

To really get to know Bangkok, you should start with the food. Whether you decide to stick with the world famous street food or partake in Bangkok's unrivalled restaurant scene, you'll be rewarded with flavours that will be hard to forget. When you are sufficiently stuffed, walk it off at the Chatuchak Weekend Market, one of the largest street markets in the entire world. Here you can try your hand at haggling for Thai antiques, handicrafts and souvenirs. (And if you work up your hunger, there is plenty of food as well.) Arrive by 10 am to beat the crowds and enjoy semi-cooler temperatures.

Bangkok is full of incredible Buddhist temples, but if you only visit one make sure its Wat Phra Kaew. Attached to Bangkok's Grand Palace, the Wat Phra Kaew is a temple complex and the most important site in Thai Buddhist culture. The golden rooftops are a sight to behold, but the most famous attraction at Wat Phra Kaew is the Emerald Buddha. Housed in the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, the statue itself is not large or particularly impressive in stature - but the temple where it sits is an unmissable place to see. Expect crowds, including locals visiting for prayers.

Bangkok Festivals in May:

On May 12, the Royal Ploughing Festival begins in Bangkok. Presided over by the Royal Family, the Royal Ploughing festival marks the start of the planting season. The major ceremony features two oxen who are lead by Brahmins around the Royal Field as they sow seeds on the ground. The oxen are then fed a ceremonial offering which, depending on how it goes, is said to determine the success of the upcoming growing season.

Hong Kong

Hong Kong in May. Hong Kong in May.

Hong Kong is mesmerising. This former British colony is an odd mix of Chinese culture and European influence, and you won't find another city like it in Asia. Hong Kong has the street food, Buddhist temples and amazing shopping found elsewhere on the continent but is also altogether different. May brings an average high of 31C but also marks the beginning of the typhoon season. While rainfall increases during May, so do the flowers - making it a fantastic time to see the city in bloom.

What to see and do in Hong Kong in May:

If you could do only one thing, and one thing only, in Hong Kong - make it The Peak. The highest point on Hong Kong island, The Peak has the best views in the city, an extraordinary panorama of the city and harbour below. You can take it all in on the Peak Tower platform, but we'd recommend the 3.5 km Peak Circle Walk which gives you a wide variety of breathtaking vantage points.

After you've seen the harbour from the skies, it's time to explore it from the water. Victoria Harbour is the heart of Hong Kong, and no visit to the city is complete without a harbour cruise on an authentic Chinese junk boat. You can purchase tickets along the promenade from a variety of local vendors, but for an extra special cruise - book at sunset.

Hong Kong Festivals in May:

Hong Kong is a city of festivals, and May is no exception. Our favourite festival starts at the very end of the month (technically the fifth day of the fifth lunar month each year, which varies on the traditional calendar) and is a spectacular showcase of local traditions. The Dragon Boat Festival celebrates the death of Qu Yuan, a national hero in China who died 2,000 years ago protesting the corrupt regime. After he drowned himself, locals beat drums and threw food into the river to prevent the fish from eating his body. Today you can expect much less gruesome festivities, but locals enjoy taking a swim and eating dumplings to remember the hero. The highlight is the dragon boat race, where intricately carved boats compete against each other to the sounds of beating drums.

Delhi, India

Delhi, India in May. Delhi, India in May.

Nothing can prepare first-time visitors for the chaos, colours, smells, and noise of Delhi. First impressions may be everything, but Delhi is full of surprises - so don't discount it just yet. Once you get past the bustling street traffic and crowds of people, you'll find a city full of welcoming locals eager to share their culture with outsiders. An amazing culture it is and Delhi is the perfect city to explore the culinary delights, historic monuments and plethora of shopping opportunities that India has to offer. May is the city's hottest month with an average high temperature of 39C - be sure to book a hotel with air conditioning and a swimming pool!

What to see and do in Delhi in May:

To begin understanding the history of Delhi, you'll want to start your holiday at the Red Fort. Constructed in the 1600's by emperor Shah Jahan, this architectural masterpiece was built on top of the decapitated bodies of prisoners for good luck. As with most tales in history, there was much more drama and political turmoil than happy endings at the Red Fort - but these stories lend themselves to a fascinating visit nonetheless. After visiting the Red Fort, head to the incredibly lavish Akshardham Temple, a Hindu temple built in 2005. With over 20,000 deities and creatures carved into the sandstone, it is a wonder to behold. Unfortunately, no cameras are allowed - so don't subscribe to the 'pics or it didn't happen' mentality.

Delhi is incredibly good value for jewellery, handbags, and traditional handicrafts - you'll undoubtedly want a treasure or two to take home. If you are ready to bargain, the Dilli Haat open-air market is the best place in Delhi for shopping and street food. Stalls feature everything you can imagine, from hand-woven carpets, silks, and even furniture. Never accept a price offered to you, it is expected (and encouraged) that you bargain.

Delhi Festivals in May:

Buddha Jayanti, one of Buddhism's most important holidays, is celebrated in May every year. Buddha Jayanti is a celebration of the birth and death of Siddhartha (Buddha) and Delhi is a wonderful city to experience this auspicious day for yourself. We recommend heading to the Tibet Centre of Delhi where you can see traditional dance performances as well as fascinating religious rituals.
