Driving on Malta's roads*
Malta is one of the few countries in the world that adheres to similar driving laws as the UK. Signs are in miles per hour and in English. That being said, it's helpful to know some of the regional laws and driving practices this unique country adheres to.
- Right hand drive - Drive on the Left, overtake on the Right.
- Minimum age for car hire - Car hire companies in Malta require you to be over 23 years of age to rent a vehicle.
- Seatbelt - It is compulsory for all occupants to wear a seatbelt. The driver is responsible for ensuring all passengers under 18 are wearing a seatbelt.
- Travelling with children - Children under 3 must be seated in an appropriate child restraint.
- Petrol stations - Most petrol stations are open at frequent intervals. In larger cities, many will be open 24 hours a day.
- Speed limits - Like the UK, road signs are in miles per hour and in English.
- Toll Roads - There are no toll roads in Malta.
Road safety laws
Although these are the standardised speed limits, there may be local variations so please be careful to check the road signs.
Throughout Malta there are a series of tunnels that by law require you to put your lights on (even during the day) as you pass through them. There are cameras within the tunnels and failure to put your lights on may result in a fine.
If you are not from the UK, most car rental companies will require you to present the driving licence that is issued by your country of residence; not an International licence, or permit. Please double check with an individual car hire company if you are unsure.
A UK driving licence will allow you to drive in Malta, and you will not need an IDP - International Driving Permit.
Passport - You may also be required to carry another form of personal ID with you while driving.
Mobile phone use
It is an offence to use a mobile phone while driving. This includes hands-free kits. If you are caught using a mobile phone whilst driving you will be issued with a large fine.
Using the horn
Use of your horn in residential areas is prohibited between the hours of 11.00pm & 6.00am
Drinking and driving
Drink driving in Malta is a very serious offence. The legal limit for drivers is 35mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood. If caught, the authorities have the power to issue fines and revoke your licence.
It is important to note that drinking alcohol and then driving may invalidate your car rental insurance and holiday insurance, irrespective of local drink driving laws. Check your policy for full details.
*This information should be considered as a broad overview of things to remember when hiring a car. It is therefore very important that you read the rental terms and conditions and associated policies for your own specific policy as well as doing your own research into the motoring laws of the country in which you will be driving.Top
