Audley End House and Gardens. Used under creative commons license from Alex Lecea

Stansted airport is surrounded by attractive Essex countryside. The nearby village of Saffron Walden is home to Audley End House and Gardens, a Jacobean mansion once owned by Charles II. The lavish house, Victorian servants' quarters, the stables and the beautiful gardens are all open to the public. If you’re looking for something to entertain both adults and children alike, the Audley End Miniature Railway offers a one-and-a-half mile ride through pretty woodland - a great way to pass the time.

The Rhodes Arts Complex is in Bishop's Stortford, the nearest town to London Stansted, and houses the Bishop's Stortford Museum and the Thorleybourne Gallery. The original part of the building is called Netteswell House, and is the birthplace of Cecil Rhodes, the founder of the South African diamond company De Beers and the state of Rhodesia. The arts centre is a creative hub and hosts dance productions, music and comedy, and has a 300-seater auditorium for showing films. The museum contains the Cecil Rhodes Collection, a selection of artefacts, documents and photographs, which provide a fascinating insight into the 19th century entrepreneur's life and legacy.
