There's a new arrival at Whipsnade Wild Animal Park, a baby white rhino born on December 28th 2007.

Weighing in at a healthy 45-50kg, the male calf - who has yet to be named - was born to mum Nowana after a gestation period of 500 days. The new baby male is the third to be born to Nowana and is currently getting to know its winter quarters.

Team leader for the Africa section, Cliff Tack, stated that: "This is a very important birth for the European breeding programme and is good news for Whipsnade as it continues the long-running success we have had with breeding this species."

Whipsnade Wild Animal Park has contributed greatly to the cause of the southern white rhino with 54 rhinos bred at the zoo since 1970.

Home to an amazing amount of animals, Whipsnade Wild Animal Park makes a perfect place for a short family break. Book your tickets today, complete with an overnight stay in a nearby hotel, with Holiday Extras.
