BA Boeing plane

British Airways has placed an order with Boeing for two 777-300ER jetliners valued at $529 million at list prices.

The British flag-carrying airline has secured options for an additional four 777-300ERS from Boeing. BA has also agreed to lease a further four 777s from aircraft leasing company GE Commercial Aviation Services (GECAS), including two 777-300s ordered in 2007 and two more recently purchased by GECAS.

"Boeing and British Airways have a relationship that stretches back over the last 50 years and this order is a reaffirmation of this ongoing partnership. The 777-300ER offers exceptional fuel economy and environmental credentials and will integrate seamlessly into British Airways' existing twin-aisle fleet,” says Boeing Commercial Airplanes vice president of sales for Europe, Russia and Central Asia, Marlin Dailey.

"In addition, our key partner GECAS continues to demonstrate confidence in the 777. With the 777s GECAS has ordered in the last two years, it has created five new 777 customers. Three of the five new customers have subsequently purchased new 777s directly from Boeing," Dailey adds.

Since 2006 GECAS has purchased 25 of the 777 planes, including Freighters and 777-300ERs. The 25 planes have been placed on long-term lease with six different airlines, including BA.

Boeing claims that thanks to its advanced materials and design the 777-300ER is 18% lighter than its closest competitor. The aircraft manufacturer says the plane consumes 20% less fuel and costs 16% less to operate.

Since the 777 was introduced Boeing has received 1,090 orders worldwide for the plane from 56 different airlines and aircraft leasing companies. Boeing says it currently has more than 350 unfilled orders for the 777 worth in excess of $91 billion at current list prices.
