Low cost airlines least child friendly
Low fares airlines including Ryanair and easyJet have fared badly in Rough Guide’s survey of the most child friendly airlines.
The airline voted best for kids in the Rough Guide survey was Virgin Atlantic, with 36% of the votes. In second place was British Airways with 32%. But easyJet picked up only 6% of the vote, while Ryanair with just 2% was the least popular airline with families.
“With both Ryanair and easyJet charging passengers per item of luggage with strict weight limits, travelling on them with kids can be far less of a ‘budget’ option,” says Rough Guide in a press statement. The survey for the travel guide book company reveals that the biggest worry of parents travelling with children is making sure they pack and carry everything they need.
The Rough Guide survey was conducted to coincide with the publication of ‘The Rough Guide to Travel with Babies and Young Children’ written by Fawzia Rasheed de Francisco. She believes that the airline families choose can make all the difference to their journey.
“Aside from baggage restrictions, budget airlines tend to be allocated inconvenient gates in airports, involving walking long distances, negotiating stairs and buses etc - tough going with small children. There's also the fact that budget airlines make it hard, if not impossible, to change plans without buying new tickets,” says Fawzia.
But travelling with children is rarely easy. No less than 22% of those surveyed said they find travelling with children to be ‘hell on earth’.
Among Fawzia’s other top tips for travelling with babies and children are to ask about early check in facilities to reduce waiting in queues at the airport, and to think about booking an airport lounge because they make it easier to keep an eye on the kids and include food and drink on tap.
