Strike action planned by immigration officials

Holidaymakers looking to get away on their summer break are facing disruption next week as immigration officers are preparing to strike.

The Public and Commercial Services (PCS) Union has revealed that 78% of the 1,100 immigration officials working for the UK Border Agency voted to stage a two-day strike beginning on August 5. It is thought that, despite the UK Border Agency introducing contingency plans, travellers from leading UK airports such as Heathrow will face severe disruption and delays to their travel plans.

The dispute in question centres around changes to working practices and shift patterns following the merger of immigration and customs staff after the creation of the UK Border Agency.

News of the planned strike action follows speculation that British Airways workers are set to stage strikes of their own this summer in response to proposals aimed at countering the £401 million losses suffered by the airline.
