Set in the Parisian underworld during the period of the French Restoration (1815 -1830). Jean Valjean is released from prison after serving nineteen years for stealing a loaf of bread. Valjean is determined to put his criminal past behind him, despite the yellow ticket of leave he must wear by law, marking him as a criminal.
