The most romantic European city breaks

Paris | France

We'll get the 'City of Love' out of the way first. Many people would argue that Paris is the most romantic city in the world, and it's pretty hard to disagree.

Couples will love ambling through the city's famous cobblestone streets, taking in iconic landmarks like the Eiffel Tower and Arc de Triomphe and admiring world-famous art the Louvre. And then there's the food. There are more Michelin-starred restaurants here than anywhere else in Europe, and whether you're dining somewhere fancy or down-to-earth, the ambience of a Parisian bistro or brasserie is sure to set the scene for the most romantic of evenings.

Treviso | Italy

We love Venice, but it's no secret that overtourism has been causing a lot of problems to this gorgeous city – so much so that from spring 2024 day-trippers will have to pay a €5 tourist tax to enter the city when it's busy.

So instead of heading to overcrowded Venice, try nearby Treviso. It's every bit as charming but much quieter, so you and your significant other can meander through the city in relative peace. While you won't find any gondolas, it does have cute canals flowing through the historic centre and waterfront bars to unwind in.

And if that's not enough, head north and visit Le Colline del Prosecco di Conegliano e Valdobbiadene. Recently designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Prosecco is produced in these picturesque rolling hills that provide the perfect backdrop to a wine tasting.

Santorini | Greece

Santorini has long been a favourite with honeymooners for good reason. Spectacular sunsets over the caldera, pretty white-washed buildings with unique blue dome roofs, and luxurious accommodations all add up to make this Greek island the perfect couple's retreat.

Couples should head to Imerovigli, nicknamed 'the balcony to the Aegean' thanks to its position at the highest point of the caldera cliffs that offers spectacular, undisturbed views Santorini is famous for. We'd recommend visiting the Greek islands in late spring or early autumn to avoid the extreme heat of recent summers.

Prague | Czech Republic

For a city break straight out of a fairy tale, take your favourite person to Prague. The medieval charm of Prague Castle can be seen from pretty much anywhere in the city – it is the largest ancient castle in the world, after all – but is probably best admired on a stroll along the stunning stone arch Charles Bridge.

While in Prague consider heading north to see the Prachov Rocks. The luscious green wilderness and 40-metre-tall rock formations make it one of the most beautiful regions in the Czech Republic.

Reykjavik | Iceland

For an alternative but equally romantic getaway for couples, try the Icelandic capital Reykjavik. It's difficult to think of anything more romantic than gazing up at the Northern Lights, and there are plenty of scenic spots in and around the city where you're likely to see them. Head there between October and March for the best chance and keep your fingers crossed!

Not to worry if you don't manage to see them though, as Reykjavik has plenty else to offer loved-up travellers. Whether you're trekking out into the otherworldly wilderness or relaxing in natural geothermal spas, we reckon there's something here to suit every couple – as long as you pack lots of layers, anyway.

Valencia | Spain

There are plenty of contenders for romantic Spanish city breaks. You'll have a great time exploring all things Gaudí in Barcelona or letting loose in Seville's lively flamenco clubs, but the allure of Valencia's fantastic food scene was too much to ignore.

There's plenty to try in Valencia, but it's hard to beat the dish it's most famous for – paella. And there's no shortage of intimate restaurants, cosy cafes and local markets where you can try some alongside local wines and tapas dishes to share.

We recommend heading to Valencia in March for the Fallas, an annual fireworks festival marking the start of spring with spectacular light shows and street parties. Or head there in summer if it's warm weather you're after – the sandy beaches are just as inviting as the paella.

Amsterdam | The Netherlands

You and your partner will never get bored in Amsterdam. By day hire bikes and cycle through the city's quaint neighbourhoods, stop by galleries and culture spots like the Van Gogh Museum and the Rijksmuseum, and explore Amsterdam by water and take a cruise along its famous canals. By night there are excellent restaurants, bars and, erm, cafes for the two of you to enjoy a memorable night out together.

Amsterdam is great for couples any time of year, but we'd head there between the end of March and the start of May when the tulips start to bloom. The bright colours and rising temperatures of spring paint Amsterdam in a whole new light – the floating flower market and nearby Keukenhof gardens are not to be missed this time of the year.
