A big country house with a little price tag

The Russ Hill began life as a country manor and still retains a charming, rustic feel. Although this large, friendly lodge is just 10 minutes' drive from Gatwick's terminals, it enjoys picturesque rural views of nearby Surrey – something of a rarity at an airport hotel.

Cosy, comfortable and close to south terminal

The Russ Hill offers well-soundproofed and comfortable rooms, a cosy bar and an informal dining room which serves breakfast and buffet-style dinners. The Russ Hill's theme is traditional British – from the wood-panelled walls and high-backed armchairs to the roasted dinners and local pub feel of the bar; it's a refreshing contrast to the familiar chain hotels that dominate the area. All rooms are en-suite and have a television, and free wifi is available in the hotel's public areas. A bus runs hourly to the airport terminals (see Getting There for further details); or it's a quick taxi ride.

Although money has been spent on this Hotel much more needs to be done. The parking is a nightmare. If you are unlucky enough to get an upstairs room you are left to drag your own suitcases. No lift. In our bedroom the taps swiveled around and squeaked. You could hear people in other rooms. Not much sleep. We asked for an early morning call that never came. The food and beverage is either self service or served by people that have no command of English so all kinds of mistakes are made. Will not be returning.

Mr Henley (Gatwick Russ Hill)

Very small room with window so high you had to climb on a dressing table to open it. Then at 5am the planes started. No double glazing Decorated maybe in the 60's very run down room with caravan panels for the divider between bathroom and bedroom. Bed pushed right against the wall Only good point was the staff

Mr Morris (Gatwick Russ Hill)

Everything was good and satisfactory. Very Good value for money and extremely convenient. Staff very polite.

Miss Storace (Gatwick Russ Hill)

The bed was uncomfortable and the room was quite noisy. The waitress in the dining room looked untidy and I didn't like her manner. Our breakfast was only warm.

Miss Holmes (Gatwick Russ Hill)

We didn't have any information on the hotel accept the name & address so didn't know what to expect. The rooms were very basic & small. The curtains in my room didn't pull together, the bed & pillows were uncomfortable. there was a large step in to the shower/WC room. The shower had two narrow steps to get to it & nothing to hold on to (no hand rails). We weren't offered or asked if needed any help with our cases & bags which wood have been good as I was in a lot of pain & not feeling at all well. The only good thing the receptionist did was to book our taxi for the next morning. When we came home someone saw my dad struggling putting cases in car so helped him. Also the directions weren't very clear when printed map out mainly from when leaving M23 so look a long time to find the hotel.

We recommend the Russ Hill for:

Rural charm - the hotel is set in a green and peaceful location that's still within easy reach of the airport.

Comfort - clean, pleasant rooms with springy beds decorated in light, fresh colours make for a good night's sleep.

Families - there's a choice of family rooms with double and bunk beds, so no matter what your family arrangement is there'll be a perfect room to suit. Kids are well catered for at the hotel's restaurant and are welcome at the bar.
