Contemporary art deco interior with views of the river Mersey

Stroll down the light and spacious corridors, lined with old, framed photographs and cuttings of the hotel's past, to the atmospheric Starways restaurant and bar. The two levels of seating mean you can opt to lounge at low tables and soft-backed chairs, or pull up a pew at the immaculate dining tables on the lower level, where there is table service. All the while, enjoy a far-reaching view of the river Mersey and hilly Welsh countryside.

Food for thought... and flying

The art deco design is the ideal setting from which to look out onto the original Speke airport runway and the vintage aircraft that now resides there. If you're in the mood for a bit of excitement, there's even a flight simulator that you can try out. But that's perhaps best enjoyed before you've filled up on dinner...

Starways Restaurant:

  • Breakfast: 6am to 10am and 7am to 11am at weekends
  • Dinner: 6pm to 10pm
  • The bar serves food from 10am to 11pm
  • Dinner is served in the bar on Sundays

The à la carte menu is available all day, and the chef is happy to meet any special requirements that you may have. The extensive menu lists modern British cuisine in good-sized portions that are nicely presented. Why not splash out on Severn and Wye oak-smoked salmon with rye bread, capers and crème fraiche, or the charcuterie board with olives and warm bread for starters, followed by one of the many dishes of mussels from the Menai straits off Anglesey? Salads, classic favourites and straight off the grill meals are also on offer, and beg the accompaniment of a glass from the extensive wine list.

Breakfast:

Breakfast and dinner are both served in the Crowne Plaza's Starways restaurant, which seats 130. So, come morning, saunter downstairs to start your day with the vast breakfast buffet. Take your pick from the selection of cheeses and cured meats, fresh fruit, pastries, muffins, cereal, and breads, plus plenty of cooked food, including black pudding. With so many ways to start your day, you'd be forgiven for wanting a lie-down again afterwards. Good job you don't have to check out till noon!

Room service:

24-hour room service is available at the Crowne Plaza hotel, although, after 11pm, the menu is limited.
