El Lago

Close to Arrieta on the northeastern coast of Lanzarote, El Lago is known for its generous portions of seafood and Spanish specialities. British holidaymakers go back time and time again for the paella, fresh squid, marinated tuna and seafood platter. The wine list, ever-changing daily specials and reasonable prices also make it very popular.

La Cabaña

Crtra Macher Yaiza 84, 35510 Tias

La Cabaña in Macher is a ten minute drive from Puerto del Carmen in the south of the island, and well worth the cab fare based on recent traveller reviews. Owned by Yorkshire-born head chef Darren Spurr and his wife Debbie (front-of-house), the team are dedicated to imaginative cooking and excellent service.

The eclectic international menu changes weekly, with main courses including roast rack of New Zealand lamb, Presa de Iberico pork, seared Barbary duck breast and fresh fish of the day. Families should note that there is no children’s menu.

Every dish is made to order from scratch and what it lacks in sea view, La Cabaña more than makes up for in atmosphere. Information on booking can be found on the restaurant’s website. La Cabaña is closed on Sundays and Mondays.

La Cantina

Calle León y Castillo 8, Teguise

This comfortably rustic eatery is in the central Lanzarote village of Teguise, the original capital of the island and now the cultural heart. Owned by a retired music producer and the Morales Duque family, it is run by British couple Benn and Zoe. The historic building dates back to the 17th century, and also includes the Secret Cinema - a cosy movie house showing classic, cult and independent film.

The varied and tasty menu is created from local produce and features traditional Canarian ‘tablas’ - wooden boards meant for sharing - as well as tapas, burgers, and other dishes such as slow-cooked beef stew and panfried salmon.

Diners love the impressive local wine list, the regular Friday night wine-tasting and the live music in the Secret Garden.

La Cantina is open seven days a week, except Christmas Day and Boxing Day. It may be very busy on Sundays when the popular village market is on. Take a look at the website for ways to book.

La Lapa

La Lapa is situated close to the ocean in El Golfo on the north west side of Lanzarote, an area famous for its green lagoon - a volcanic crater filled with emerald water.

Holidaymakers love the well-priced menu of simply-cooked fresh fish and tasty treats like garlic prawns, mixed fish platter, grilled octopus and Canarian salted potatoes. There are non-fishy options including steak and pasta too, and La Lapa is very family-friendly.

Los Aljibes de Tahiche

Undoubtedly a unique setting for a meal, this place is housed in old water tanks (aljibes) converted into a restaurant and venue - and designed by legendary local artist and architect César Manrique.

Los Aljibes is known for its hearty and very meaty fare: from steak and pork to shoulder of lamb and chicken cooked in beer. Host Hernan and his family are passionate about their food, focusing on local produce and fresh daily specials. They bake fresh bread at the restaurant, much-loved by diners, and offer a ‘healthy’ selection of wines.

Visitors say Los Aljibes is good value with excellent service and a charming ambience.The cactus garden provides shelter from the persistent wind if you fancy some al fresco dining.
