QE2 leaves Sydney on final world cruise
The cruise ship QE2 has left Sydney for the last time on her farewell world cruise, but not before meeting sister cruise liner Queen Victoria.
Cunards QE2 has played host to many a happy cruise holiday, but arrived in Sydney for the final time on 24 February, exactly 30 years after she made her first call at the popular Australian city.
Queen Victoria, also on a world cruise, arrived in Sydney on 23 February. The two ocean liners met for an historic sail past on Sunday evening in Sydney. QE2 left her berth at Garden Island while Queen Victoria left hers at Circular Quay at 1800 hours local time.
The cruise liners then passed on either side of Fort Denison in Sydney harbour, greeting each other with a whistle salute which could be heard over 10 miles away.
Following the sail past QE2 docked at Circular Quay before her final departure from Sydney this morning. The historic ship will now make her last calls in Australia in Hobart on 27 February, Melbourne on 29 February, Adelaide on 2 March, Albany on 4 March and Fremantle on 5 March.
Both QE2 and Queen Victoria left on 6 January on their world cruises from their home port of Southampton. Queen Victoria now visits Brisbane on 26 February and Port Douglas on 29 February.
Cunards new cruise ship Queen Victoria set sail for her maiden voyage on 11 December after being named by the Duchess of Cornwall the previous day. Queen Victoria is now on a 105 day world cruise stopping in 37 ports in 23 countries, including New York where she met QE2 as well as Queen Mary 2.
QE2 has been in service for almost forty years, the longest serving ship in Cunards 168 year history. She was launched by Queen Elizabeth II on 20 September 1967 and has travelled 5.6 million nautical miles and completed 25 world cruises.
When she leaves Cunard service in November this year QE2 will begin a new life as a luxury hotel and entertainment destination in Dubai.
