Our Tips For Keeping Children Amused on Long Car Hire Journeys.

Are we there yet?!.

Never beaten on price

We've all been there. Stuck in traffic with the kids in the back seat of the car, stuffy and hot, getting fidgetier by the second. You've meticulously planned and prepared for every type of weather, terrain and activity whilst you're away, but one thing you've still not mastered is how to keep your small ones amused on the journey. There are tonnes of hints and tips out there, so we thought we'd compile our favourites to help you on your next family trip.

Be sure to let us know your handy tips and tricks in the comments below!

1. Audiobooks

Audiobooks are great. They're educational and, depending on the age of your child, can be enjoyed by the whole car. But just incase you don't fancy listening to Peppa Pig for the 6th time in a row, there are tonnes of affordable MP3 players you can get your hands on. Grab yourself one of those, some headphones and each child could be listening to a different book in the backseat. And you, well - you can be left with the peace and quiet of the road.

2. The Ipad

The Ipad - the mystical, magical giant smart-phone. They're not for everyone, but they can certainly be handy on long journeys. Fill it with educational games to keep your children amused and they'll be learning at the same time!

3. Colouring Books

Colouring books are perfect for something physical to keep little hands busy. Just make sure your young ones only have crayons or pencils - no one wants their upholstery to resemble a Jackson Pollock painting!

4. Traditional Car Games

Sometimes all you need to hold their attention is a game of I-Spy. It's traditional, we know, but sometimes old-school is exactly what you need. It's also a great idea to try and make up some games of your own, or quizzes made up of facts of where you are visiting. Stash a few prizes for correct answers and they'll be amused in no time!

5. Camera

If you've got an old digital camera laying around, this is a great way to keep your kids amused on the back seat. They can take tonnes of photos and - you never know - they might end up snapping a gem! Children have a knack for snapping some real candid shots, so let them take care of documenting the journey whilst you take care of the driving.

6. Travel Journals

These go hand in hand with letting your kids loose with your old digital camera. You can buy ready-made travel journals or, if you fancy getting crafty with the kids before setting off, you can always make your own. Include questions and cool facts about your destination, like what currency you'll be using and some useful phrases in the language and they'll be amused for hours!

7. Snacks!

Of course, these are as much to keep you sane as they are for your children. Just a few small snacks to keep the kids sweet in the back seat - but maybe not too sugary as you could end up with quite the opposite to the peace and quiet you were hoping for!
