Travel insurance is a necessity for holidays both home and abroad, but deciding on who to book with can prove a daunting experience. Dr Laurence Gerlis, health advisor with the Holiday Extras Expert Panel, offers an overview of key factors holidaymakers should consider when booking travel insurance.
Have you declared all your previous and current illnesses? You may find that any claim could easily be invalidated if the insurance company can claim that it is linked to a non-declared previous condition.
Check the age criteria. You may think you are insured only to find certain age groups are excluded.
Some policies contain many exclusions such as skiing or dangerous activities.
Some policies only cover medical costs incurred in certain countries with the exclusion of others.
You may find that the policy only covers costs until you reach the UK. From there, you may not be covered and are reliant on the NHS.
Do not assume that you're covered if someone else in your party falls ill and you have to cancel. This may be very limited.
Similarly, do not assume that you're covered if a relative at home is ill and you have to cancel or curtail.
Holiday Extras offers a wide range of insurance policies to meet all requirements and budgets. Visit our travel insurance page and book your cover today.
