Pre-Existing Medical Conditions with Holiday Insurance
It can be difficult to find cheap holiday insurance with a pre-existing medical condition, and finding a low-cost provider offering fully comprehensive cover even more so. At Holiday Extras, we know how important a holiday is for the recovery period, a celebration or just some down-time. With this in mind, it is important for us to know your medical history - both past and present - so we can arrange an affordable yet appropriate level of cover for your condition.
It is important to declare all of your medical conditions - even if you have been successfully cured for some time - because it can impact on your level of coverage. Failure to do so could invalidate your policy and you will be unable make a claim should anything happen to you.
- Single trip: financial protection is provided for one trip of up to 90 days. If your holiday exceeds this period - you will not be covered!
- Annual multi-trip: you are entitled to cover for an unlimited number of trips, each up to the duration of 31 days, across 12 months.
Who is my policy provider?
Latitude insurance is powered by Holiday Extras, so we get to work closely with the travel insurance experts within the Latitude team to arrange your tailored quotes. They play a big role in providing the best travel insurance with the cheapest additional cover for your medical condition, without compromising on your financial protection.
What does the medical screening involve?
Your medical screening entails a series of questions regarding your medication and any treatment/surgery received or waiting to be received. They will not be prying questions, we wont be asking for the names of your medication or the type of surgery youve undergone, just how many you use and whether youve recently been seen for medical treatment. Depending on your condition, you will be asked to complete the medical screening via our online booking system or you may be transferred to our friendly and UK based insurance call centre team.

What levels of cover should I be looking for?
Although the levels of cover you are entitled to vary according to your condition, as a general rule, travel insurance comparison sites suggest that you should be looking for at least £2 million to cover medical bills and £2,000 cancellation cover. At Holiday Extras, we can provide that and more. We dont have a strict standard level of cover for those travelling with a medical condition because we understand how individual your needs are. So to demonstrate, we have an example of a tailored quote by Latitude insurance for a customer with diabetes heading to Europe for one week.
What if I choose not to declare my medical conditions?
Should you choose to go abroad without any form of travel insurance and require medical attention, unfortunately you will be responsible for the whole bill, which can cost thousands. For example, to be flown back from Australia to the UK via stretcher and helicopter can cost between £15-£20k!
Or if you decide to hold back on some - or all - of your medical conditions and need to make a claim, the initial policy will be rendered invalid and all of your claims may be rejected.
A medical condition doesn't mean you need to miss out and the right travel insurance ensures you're fully covered to try something new. We have both a regular sports cover and a winter sports cover available for an additional fee. Both options provide cover for search and rescue, equipment hire and in the case of hitting the slopes - avalanche cover is also included.
Be sure to check your policy wording to ensure which sports you are covered for because there are a few activities we don't include but, for a small added premium, our call centre team will be able to lend a hand customising your policy.
