Windsurfing holidays for single travellers

Windsurfing for single travellers

Windsurfers are accustomed to travelling alone, with non-surfing spouses not too keen on being left on a windy beach!

Single supplements and the aprés windsurf social side are a couple of important considerations for the solo windsurf traveller.

The single supplement, levied usually on accommodation and/or airport transfers, can often increase the advertised holiday price by 50%. To avoid this, look for windsurf travel companies that offer single rooms or offer discounts to solo travellers.

Many destinations are great for windsurfing, but have a poor social scene. Take Maui for example: the windsurf conditions are probably among the best in the world, but all restaurants and bars on the North Shore shut early and few people are around after dark. Morocco is another destination where you get fantastic windsurf conditions but close to nothing on the social side.

The solo windsurfer will benefit by choosing destinations that show evidence of a social life after the windsurfing day closes, and in which people are opened minded, approachable and friendly.

A good example is Brazil, which has amazing wind conditions in the Noreste region. And who hasn't heard of Brazilian hospitality and nightlife?

Chilling after a day of jibes and jumps by having a caipirinha and a chat with fellow sports addicts, after which dancing the night away on exotic rhythms, is all part of the lifestyle.

Some countries or destinations that are perhaps not well known for their nightlife, but do have a high volume of tourists passing though, can often prove to offer fun evening entertainment. The Greek islands, the Canary Islands and resorts like Sharm el Sheikh in Egypt are a few such places and are a winner for the solo windsurf traveller.
