Do I pay extra for travelling with my board?

By Ross Barnard

Windsurfing equipmentWhether you will have to pay to take your windsurfing equipment aboard your flight will depend upon the airline's policy.

We've identified a selection of budget, charter and long haul airlines that will allow you to stow your windsurfing equipment in the hold and how much it will cost.

Virgin Atlantic will allow surfboards and surfing equipment to be taken aboard the plane, completely free of charge. Their classification of equipment comprises a windsurfing bag containing one board, one mast, one boom and one sail. This bag must weigh no more than 23kg.

If you're not travelling long-haul and you are planning to use a budget or economy airline, we've found a few that are happy to let you bring your windsurfing equipment aboard. easyJet allows passengers to carry sporting equipment, which includes windsurfing gear, in the hold area of the plane for the price of £18.50 per piece of baggage, when booked in advance. This baggage can weigh no more than 32kgs.

Monarch Airlines will also allow you to stow windsurfing gear in the hold luggage area of the plane. They will charge you a flat fee of £35 per piece of baggage, and this cannot be any heavier than 32kgs. You can save yourself £5 if you pre-book online or over the phone up to four days before your flight.

Thomas Cook will charge you £40 per piece of baggage for a return short haul trip, or £60 per piece of baggage for long haul. Baggage must not weigh over 30kgs. Also, sister company Thomson will let you take what you need on board, but will charge you as excess weight, providing you call them before you are scheduled to fly.

These are just a few of the airlines out there and the list is far from exhaustive. If you have your mind set on another operator, we recommend that you call them as early as possible to enquire, as some airlines do have a limited availability for extra hold baggage.
