Holiday Extras Logo Heathrow Ulez Guide

If you're travelling through London and are concerned about the Ultra Low Emissions Zone (ULEZ) Charges, then park your concerns right here. We've got all the information you need to understand what ULEZ charges will apply, as well as how to make a payment - so you can breathe a sigh of relief, when you're driving through the bustling city, and not risk any unexpected penalty charges!

Do I need to pay the ULEZ charge?

You will need to pay the ULEZ charge if your vehicle doesn't meet the ULEZ emissions standards and isn't exempt. You can find out if your vehicle is ULEZ compliant via our help page.

ULEZ operates 24 hours-a-day, every day of the year, except Christmas Day and charging days run from midnight to midnight. If you drive within the ULEZ area across two days, for example before midnight and after midnight, you need to pay two daily charges.

Where does the ULEZ charge apply?

The ULEZ is being expanded from 29th August and will cover all 33 London Boroughs. Learn more about ULEZ expansion. The charges only apply if you drive your vehicle within the ULEZ and parked vehicles are not subject to any charges.

How much is the ULEZ charge?

If your vehicle doesn't meet the ULEZ emissions standards, you need to pay a daily charge to drive within the zone, as follows:

  • Daily charge: £12.50
  • Penalty charge: £180 (£90 if paid within 14 days)

This applies to cars, motorcycles, vans and specialist vehicles (up to and including 3.5 tonnes) and minibuses (up to and including 5 tonnes).

When can I pay the ULEZ charge?

You can pay by midnight on the third day following the journey, or plan ahead, and pay up to 90 days in advance. Make sure you pay on time or you risk getting a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN).

You can pay for up to three previous days, today, the next day, or you can pay for a custom date range.

Payment options available

There are several easy ways you can pay your ULEZ charge today. Payment options include:

Can I set up an automatic payment?

Yes, with 'Auto Pay' you'll automatically be billed every month for the number of charging days your vehicle travels within ULEZ. The great news is there are no registration fees or renewal fees when you set this up, and it's quick and easy to do!

Setting up Auto Pay is a hassle-free way of paying your charges and you'll benefit from:

  • Not having to worry about forgetting to pay charges
  • Being protected against receiving Penalty Charge Notices whilst registered
  • Plus, you can register up to five vehicles!

Visit TfL's Auto Pay page to register and find out more.

Will the Congestion Charge still apply?

Yes, if you drive within the Congestion Charge zone during the applicable times you will need to pay the Congestion Charge, even if you meet the ULEZ emissions standards or have paid ULEZ daily charges.

Do I need to pay ULEZ charge if I drive a non-registered UK vehicle?

Yes, charges will still apply. Owners of non-UK registered vehicles also need to meet the ULEZ emissions standards or pay the daily charge to drive within the zone.

Drive a larger vehicle?

If you're driving a lorry, van or specialist heavy vehicle (over 3.5 tonnes) or bus, minibus and coach (all over 5 tonnes) you may need to pay a Low Emission Zone (LEZ) Charge if your vehicle does not meet the LEZ emissions standards. The LEZ covers most of Greater London and operates 24 hours-a-day, every day of the year. The LEZ is different to ULEZ or the Congestion Charge zone.
